John says:
Is this what you think proper development is? A kid propped up by donors and wealthy book publishers and PR stunts. Yes, he may be fantastic, but it would be fantastic if he did this to help his town and his county. Has Malawi fared any better for this? Now there is Madonna and Windmill Boy. How about jobs, how about food, how about proper development. You guys are just as bad as those NGOs you ask to be better.

Sam says:
No one said this was an example of proper development - it is an example of something positive coming out of Malawi and it is worth taking a look at. A kid from Malawi who builds a windmill on his own and then gets a book deal is a bad ass entrepreneur - every conversation about Africa can't be about some master development plan, so celebrate the small victories.

Small victories are great. A small victory would have been promoting William 2 years ago- not talking about him to a presumably well educated audience that you have on your site... more than 6 months after he appeared on the Today Show.

Thanks Sam and John for your comments - six months ago would have been better, but I just found out about this story and I thought it was worthwhile to share it. No big solution - just providing our small support for something we were excited about.
